Anne (Sergia) Gallo was born in 1939 on an auspicious day for Latinos, December 12th, the feast day of the Virgin of Guadalupe, in Corpus Christi, Texas. Guadalupe is celebrated as the Catholic patron saint of Mexico and the Americas. Anne was devoted to the Virgin of Guadalupe and prayed daily. In Chicago on July 2, 2023, at 83 years young, she left her body in peace with loved ones surrounding her.
She was a first-generation Mexican-American raised in the segregated South when Mexicans were discriminated against, and women were a minority in many professions. Anne noted Latino & Women’s accomplishments to her family, so we would not forget how American culture had evolved. She was fortunate to go to school and learn how to read, but due to her family circumstances dropped out of school before graduating from 8th grade. She held fiercely the philosophy that children are what they are taught and helped raise and positively influence many children in her family and others. Her reading ability, curiosity, imagination, and grit fueled the belief that all is possible. She felt her job was to pass that belief on and was a cheerleader for others, whether you wanted the advice or not!
She had the rare ability to bring tenderness, light, and laughter to people. Her family joked she could talk to a rock. She immediately endeared herself to strangers and family alike. An empathetic non-judgmental listener, many found refuge in her. Anne called Chicago home for most of her adult life. Chicago’s ethnic diversity and big city hustle and bustle inspired her to learn about art, other cultures and customs through her friendships.
Anne never missed a chance to dance and move to the rhythm of the beat when she was fully able or later in life, using a cane or sitting in her walker. While celebrating her 80th year, she became the informal elder “headliner” at several dance events and ignited smiles.
In lieu of flowers please consider supporting the work of Corpus Christi, Texas based West Side Helping Hand. They provide after school services for low-income school children grades 1-6. https://wshhcc.org/donate/ Please note in the Comment Box: “In Honor of Anne Gallo” She’d be equally as happy if you remembered her and said a prayer, danced to a beat, brought a smile to someone’s face or took some other action in the world from your heart. My family would love it if you’d share what you did on this website or if you emailed kickbuttannie@gmail.com.
We miss the zesty 83-year-old but are consoled by the thought that she’s making fun-loving mischief somewhere and moving to a beat. We love you Mom, Grandma, Nani, Anne.
You live on in the hearts and smiles of many.
